Fragonard's masterfully conceived image of a young woman inscribing a tree is alternately titled "Le Chiffre d'Amour" [The Sign of Love]. British designer-engraver Josset was among the 20th Century's notable practitioners of mezzotint.

This striking self-portrait with painter's palette is one of a number executed by Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun. A brilliant artist, she lived in a period restrictive for women. Her strong will enabled her to strike a sometimes precarious balance between the demands of her work and society. Despite all she lived to carve out a long, successful career.
