OPEN EDITION n LIMITED EDITION PRINTS

Please note that the following information refers specifically to
prints issued by Don Paulsen and may not be applicable to
prints issued by other photographers

OPEN EDITION PRINTS
The signed original Don Paulsen photographs we offer online [$200. ea.]
are what is termed "open edition" prints.  They differ from Mr. Paulsen's "limited
edition" prints in two ways: 1) at 8x10 in. the open edition prints are smaller in
size than the limited edition prints, 2) the open edition prints are unnumbered;
the limited edition  prints are numbered.

HOW DO THEY COMPARE OTHERWISE? In all other respects the open
edition prints are identical to the limited edition prints. Printing method and paper,
signature, inscriptions, matting, presentation, overall quality are identical.

HOW MANY PRINTS WILL BE ISSUED? We are often asked if "open edition"
means that the prints will be issued in large quantities, thus diminishing their
uniqueness and value. The answer is no. Like the limited edition prints each
open edition print is a hand-printed museum quality photograph. Each is printed to
order and requires much individual work. The prints cannot be mass-produced.

WHY DO SOME COLLECTORS PREFER THEM? In our experience there
are various reasons why a collector elects to acquire an open edition print.  Among
them: wall space, budget, a preference for smaller-format photographs, the desire
to create a compact display of several related framed images. Open edition prints
have also proven attractive to buyers who may not be committed collectors but simply
wish to have a first-quality signed original print of a favorite image.

LIMITED EDITION PRINTS
Signed original Don Paulsen photographs are also available as "limited edition"
prints. All images are issued in the following limited editions:

Print size: 11x14 in.  Edition: 100 prints
Print size: 16x20 in.  Edition: 100 prints

This means that after 100 11x14 in. and 100 16x20 in. signed original prints of a given
image have been issued there will be no further signed original limited edition prints
of that image issued in any form. Each limited edition print is numbered in ink
[for example, "25/100" -- meaning number 25 of the total of 100 prints issued].

Prints larger than 16x20 in., for example a 20x24 in. print, may also be ordered.
However a larger print will not add more prints to the total of 100 prints.  Each larger
print will be considered one of the total edition of 100 16x20 in. prints and be numbered
as part of that edition.

Current prices for the limited edition prints are as follows [posted February 25, 2000]:

11x14 in. (edition of 100): $600.
16x20 in. (edition of 100): $850.
Larger prints: price quoted upon request

HOW MANY WILL BE ISSUED? Like open edition prints, the limited edition
prints are only printed to order; the edition sizes are therefore theoretical maximums.
For example, if only 40 prints of a given image are ordered in 11x14 in. size there will
only be 40 printed, despite the fact that the theoretical maximum edition is 100.

WHY DO SOME COLLECTORS PREFER THEM? Interestingly, we find that
the larger size is often a more important factor for collectors than the numerical
limitation of edition. For example, a collector may wish to make the photograph the
centerpiece of a room, therefore larger size is an asset. There are also
collectors who feel more comfortable purchasing a limited edition print, even
though they recognize that, numerically, it may be no rarer than the open
edition version of the same image.
