Martin Luther King, Jr., Washington DC, August 28, 1963

FRED W. McDARRAH photographs of Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Bob Dylan, Robert F. Kennedy and others are among the iconic images of the 1960s. For many this handful of images defines McDarrah's work. Yet beyond these his career spans 50+ years and deals with a surprising variety of subjects. One comes to appreciate that the famous images are but a small part of his overall achievement.

This exhibition includes select McDarrah portraits of political and cultural figures 1960s to 1990s. Some have been widely published and exhibited. Others are little known to the general audience.

This photograph of Andy Warhol trying on a vintage bandmaster's uniform was taken at the time of the performance of "The Exploding Plastic Inevitable" at the Dom on St, Mark's Place. Warhol's production, featuring the Velvet Underground and NIco, was a landmark in rock 'n' roll performance history.

McDarrah extensively photographed Andy Warhol and the Factory milieu in the 1960s and 70s and continued until Warhol's untimely demise.

McDarrah has consistently photographed political figures over the years. This 1968 photograph of Richard M. Nixon is among
his most striking.

Like McDarrah's famous 1967 image of
Robert F. Kennedy
[34] subsequent events
in the subject's life impart to the image
a special significance.

Artist Norman Bluhm is shown engaged in
"action painting," an offshoot of Pollock and Abstract Expressionism in which the vigorous physical act of painting is tantamont to
artistic expression itself.

This photograph served as the cover for
McDarrah's classic 1961 book "The Artist's
World," a photo-essay on the artists, dealers, critics, curators, patrons and others who
made up the New York art world.

"The Artist's World" remains a model of its type.

This 1965 photograph of Bob Dylan was first published in a Village Voice article entitled
"Brecht of the Jukebox, Poet of Electric Guitar."

It became famous after being circulated as a Personality Poster in the 1960s.

McDarrah's spontaneous capture of a then-favorite Dylan gesture [the salute] has subsequently obtained icon status. It is undoubtedly one of
 the great Bob Dylan photographs.

A poignant image of Robert F. Kennedy during a tour of a New York slum tenement building.

Having himself been raised in such a New York tenement building, McDarrah was able to calculate his vantage point in advance and was positioned to take the photograph (over the sill of an inner door transom) when RFK passed by.

Some critics have described this photograph
 as McDarrah's masterpiece.

Photographed during the same session as
the famous Dylan salute
[28]. This photograph
hasn't achieved the great notoriety of its
counterpart; yet, in retrospect, it seems
equally successful at embodying the
Bob Dylan ethos c.1965.
